EDM, House, Remixes and Mashups
I started a rap group in Berkeley, California with friends doing talent shows in the late 70’s. From there I began a DJ group called Control Crew with a close friend and finally I was fortunate to be in a one-hit wonder group in the 1980’s.
Seeing people enjoying themselves and smiling. Even better if they leave the dance floor drenched in sweat! It is also nice to introduce new music to others.
This is difficult to say as a lot depends on the audience demographics, but one option is I like is Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. It is well known, and the beat is deceptively danceable. It also is mid-tempo so mixing to either decrease or increase the sets tempo is not difficult.
I recall figuring out a way to play vinyl backwards in my apartment in Oakland using a contraption of two 45 adaptors and a number 2 pencil. I had the record above the turntable and turned my needle upside down with the weight set to lift it up so it would follow the grooves outward. Doing this live at a party in Berkeley was something I will never forget. I am extremely glad I recorded it..
I love House music as it reminds me of disco I listened to in the late 70’s and early 80’s. The reason is a good house set can provide an energetic vibe and get people moving, enjoying themselves and interacting positively with others. Nothing beats that for me.
J. Dilla. He was involved with so many tracks that I love.
I wish I could say I know the answer to this! The Bee Gees, Prince and George Michael have worked for me in the past regardless of the crowd.
Ignore anyone telling you to follow strict rules and enjoy experimenting to see what works best for you and your audience. Make your focus the enjoyment of others. If you are fortunate recognition may follow.
