What Do You Play?

Trance, Progressive Trance, Tech Trance, Melodic Techno, Mainstage

What's your musical origin story?

I started playing guitar when I was 5 years old as my dad and my oldest  brother were playing it too.  When I was 10 I also picked up the Alto  Saxophone.  During Middle school and High School I performed in marching  band, jazz band, and orchestra and played many instruments in the  process.  I also played in several punk rock and thrash metal cover  bands during high school and college.  It wasn’t until my college days  that I discovered EDM music and a Tuesday Techno night at a club in my  college town of San Luis Obispo, CA.  This was also about the time that  trance started to emerge as its own genre, but I instantly fell in love  with the driving beats and euphoric breakdowns.  It added a good sonic  diversity from my punk, trash metal and classical palette yet had an  energy that the other music could not evoke for me.  Fast forward  several decades latter and my children now being musical learners, one  of my sons discovered EDM music and all my memories of my techno  clubbing days flooded back to me.  So, my son and I decide that we were  going to make EDM music.  Well, it didn’t go well.  We didn’t understand  the arrangement and technical details so anything we produced was just,  well bad.  But what we did notice is that the best records we were  hearing were from producers who were DJ’s, so we thought if we become  good DJ’s it should help us to become good producers.  So here I am on  my musical production journey, but really fell in love with being behind  the decks.  I still haven’t produced my first official record, but I  will.

What's your favorite thing about being a DJ?

Music  is a muse that allows us to transcend this mortal plane and affords us  to reconnect to the Divine.  Since we are all composed of the Divine, it  is where our spirits desire to be, so when we encounter the Divine our  hearts are euphoric. It reminds us of our own Divinity and it is where  we know we truly belong.  I enjoy crafting and creating a journey where  we have the opportunity to experience this reuniting with Divinity as  often as we need.  I really enjoy listening to hundreds of new tracks  every Friday in preparation for the next journey.

What's your go-to track to get the party started?

Not so much a track, but a mood/genre….when crafting a journey it’s  about setting the right environment and growing from there.  I feel this  changes depending on me, my maturity and where I am at on my own  journey.  Lately, I have been finding that melodic house or afro house  is setting a good mood/pace to start the journey/party.

Share a memorable DJing moment or gig experience.

So, it actually isn’t my experience but it was my son’s first DJ gig  where he got to perform for about 500 of his friends last summer.  To  see how nervous and excited he was before and then how excited and  energized he was after the gig.  Just enjoyed sharing that with him more  than anything I have done.

What's your favorite genre to spin, and why?

Trance hands down.  The energy, the positive vibe and its the perfect  combination of techno and euphoric breakdowns and angelic vocals.

If you could collaborate with any artist (living or dead), who would it be?

I can narrow it down to three artists: Ludwig Von Beethoven, Bob Marley  and Cliff Burton. Imagine LVB and a DAW, Bob Marley vocals and Cliff  Burton bass lines…..a very eclectic trance album.

What's your secret weapon track that always gets a great response?

This  is tough, I typically do not repeat songs on any set.  Each set is a  curated journey of music that is from newly released music from that  week.  But I do find that when you go from a beautiful trance breakdown  and build up to a euphoric drop, always slays.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to aspiring DJs?

Have epistemic curiosity, be courageous, put yourself out there and be  consistent, your tribe will coalesce but it takes time and patience.
